What is line movement?

Line movement is the difference between the number a market opened at and the number it shows now. It records how the market repriced a game. It does not grade the new price.

Opening line, closing line, and the move

A market has a life. A book posts a first number, the opening line, often days before the game. Bettors and news act on it. The book adjusts. The last number before kickoff is the closing line. Line movement is the path between the two. For a spread and a total it is measured in points. For a moneyline it is measured in price, or in the implied probability that the price encodes.

Direction matters more than size. A spread going from -6 to -7.5 moved toward the favorite: the favorite is now laying more points. A total going from 48.5 to 51.5 moved toward the over. Saying a line moved toward a side means the side got a worse price than it opened at, because the market now likes it more.

On Locksmith game pages the reference number for today's games is the earliest snapshot the engine tracked that day, labelled that way. The historical dataset stores the opening line where Action Network kept one (about half the games) plus the consensus number at 24, 12, 7, 3 and 1 hours before kickoff where it was tracked, so a move can be measured from whichever of those points exists.

Why a line moves

  • Handle. A book that has taken far more on one side moves the number to invite the other side.
  • Bets it respects. A single large bet from an account with a record can move a line by itself.
  • News. Injuries, a quarterback change, weather and travel all change the fair number.
  • Other books. Once one book moves, others usually follow within minutes rather than get picked off at the stale number.

A move is the sum of all of these. Looking at the number alone, you cannot tell which reason drove it. That is why a move is best read next to the splits and the injury report, not by itself.

A real move, read in order

Buccaneers at Lions, 9/15/2024, an NFL 2024 week 2 game with a true opening line on file. The Lions opened -6 and closed -7.5. That is a 1.5-point move toward the Lions. The total opened 48.5 and closed 51.5, a 3-point move toward the over.

Now the splits. The Buccaneers held 72% of spread tickets but only 46% of spread money; the Lions held 28% of tickets and 54% of the money. The spread moved toward the money and against the tickets. The over held 64% of tickets and 71% of money, and the total moved toward it, with both. One move went against the ticket majority. One went with everything. Both are ordinary.

The practical point is price. Anyone who took the Buccaneers at the open got +6. Anyone taking them at kickoff got +7.5. The move tells you the market repriced the game. It does not tell you which number was right: the Buccaneers won 20-16, and that is one game.

For contrast, Giants at Rams on 9/21/2026 had the money on the Giants (61% of it against 58% of tickets, read at 8:14 PM ET on game day, a minute before kickoff) while every consensus snapshot Locksmith tracked on game day, from the morning to kickoff, had the Rams -6.5. Money on a side is not a move. Those figures were read at 8:14 PM ET on game day; the game page shows the closing numbers, which can differ from a pre-kickoff snapshot by a point.

What moves have and have not done

Across as of 9/21/2026, 822 NFL games 2023 week 5 to 2026 week 2, Action Network closing splits: totals moved from the open toward the money side in 63-71% of games, depending on the window. Spreads moved toward the money side in only 44-52%. A spread is as likely to move against the money as with it. From 7 hours before kickoff, the spread was unchanged at the close 52% of the time.

Movement did not turn the money side into a winner. Betting the side whose money share topped its ticket share covered the spread 50.0% (384-384-13) and hit the total 50.8% (396-383-6) at the close, both under the 52.4% break-even at -110. Requiring the line to have moved toward that side as well gave 50.7% (115-112-3) on the spread and 50.7% (148-144-2) on the total. Those counts cover 822 NFL games, 2023 week 5 to 2026 week 2, Action Network closing splits, refreshed hourly from the engine. The backtest page lets you set the minimum move and the window it is measured from.

What line movement does not tell you

  • Why the line moved. Handle, one bet, an injury and another book's move all look the same on the number.
  • Whether the new number is right. The closing line is the market's best guess, and even it is wrong about half the time against the spread by construction.
  • Whether you should chase it. A move you missed is a worse price for you, not a confirmation.
  • What will happen. Every figure here is a count of past games at the closing line, not a forecast.

How to use it

Record the open, note the direction, and put the move next to the splits and the news. If the move and the money agree, ask whether the news explains both. If they disagree, ask what the book knows that the tickets do not. The market table does that lineup for every NFL game and shows the past record of the same reading. The move is a fact about the market. The result is a fact about the game.

Common questions

What is line movement?

Line movement is the change in a betting number over time: a spread going from -6 to -7.5, a total from 48.5 to 51.5, or a moneyline from -300 to -280. The opening line is the first number posted. The closing line is the number at kickoff. The move is the difference.

Why do betting lines move?

Books move a line to manage what they have taken on each side and to react to news. Big bets, lopsided handle, injuries, weather and other books' numbers all push a line. A move records that the market repriced the game. It does not say which reason drove it.

Do lines move toward the money?

Sometimes. In the Locksmith dataset totals moved from open toward the money side in 63-71% of games, while spreads moved toward the money side in only 44-52% of games (as of 9/21/2026, 822 NFL games 2023 week 5 to 2026 week 2, Action Network closing splits).

How much do NFL spreads move before kickoff?

Often not at all late in the week. From 7 hours before kickoff the spread was unchanged at the close 52% of the time (as of 9/21/2026, 822 NFL games 2023 week 5 to 2026 week 2, Action Network closing splits). Most of the movement a spread will make has usually happened by game day.

Does the money side win more when the line moved toward it?

Not by enough to matter. Requiring the line to have moved toward the money side since the open gave 50.7% (115-112-3) on the spread and 50.7% (148-144-2) on the total, against 50.0% (384-384-13) and 50.8% (396-383-6) without the condition (822 NFL games, 2023 week 5 to 2026 week 2, Action Network closing splits, refreshed hourly).
